Tomalis
Anastasia was truly a sicko. Times had really changed because I had never been attacked by such an aggressive woman. The term “gold digger” didn’t do her justice. I didn’t know what the hell to call her. I quickly put that little episode out of my mind and went on to handle my business.
I had an appointment with an old friend: Paul Lipford. He was one of the best private detectives in the business and I had hired him on many occasions to check out prospective business associates. I learned early on that, in business dealings, you can often be found guilty by association. Before I signed on to any large contracts, I checked everyone out first.
This time I was going to see him about something more personal. I was passing the Home Depot when I spotted that Chico fellow from the mail room—Zetta’s latest manwhore—coming out the front door carrying several bags. I had heard someplace that he was good at building things and was curious about what he was working on. It was ironic. I had started Wolfe because I loved to build things and yet, it was the one thing I rarely had time to do. I only visited my plants once a month on average and I missed the hands-on activity. I missed it a whole lot.
I met with Paul and told him what I needed and then had Lavar drop me off at home where Barron was waiting for me. He would drink most of the night and then sleep all day. It wasn’t healthy—it never was—but I wasn’t his daddy and he had to make his own mistakes and learn from them.
I went up to the guest bedroom and nudged him awake. “Hey, sleepyhead, get up. We’re going out this evening.”
“Out where?” Barron asked, propping his elbows on the pillows. “I want to go back to Uranus.”
“No, we’re not going there.” I shook my head. “How many naked women do you need to see on a weekly basis?”
“As many as I can see. There’s nothing wrong with naked women. We were all born naked and it’s a beautiful thing.”
“I guess that’s why you’re always going to that nude beach, huh?” I chided him.
“Yeah, hell yeah! If I could, I’d live on a nude beach.”
“Then it shall be yours, man.”
His eyes grew wider than saucers. “Really? Don’t play with me, Tomalis.”
“Hey, if you want to live on a nude beach, then you shall. I’ll have someone start checking out available properties and if they can’t find one, then we’ll just have to build a custom home. Any preference of location? I know there are numerous nude beaches across the globe.”
“Damn, man. Look at how far you’ve come; from fixing appliances for Pop to being able to snap your fingers and make anything happen.”
“Not true. I can’t make anything happen. I can’t make my son open up to me. I can’t make Zetta stop whoring around. I can’t make Heather stop using those damn pills.”
“She’s still on them?” Barron asked.
